Wait for it….

Friday, January 28th, 2005

My brother and I are working on a design for my blog. Well, mostly it’s my brother but who’s counting? Once it’s up and running you, internet, will have to let me know what you think of it. I’m sure all 5 of the people who read this blog are now in a state of agitated suspense. HA!

Let’s Hear it for the Girls!

Thursday, January 27th, 2005

I go to school with some of the best people ever! I love that we made “salmon” pants tonight and that Angele couldn’t concentrate because there was a fish on her paper. All the songs we sing at night, the inability to control the volume of our voices and all the help and support that everyone is willing to give. Costume Studies, you rock!

Much Better

Wednesday, January 26th, 2005

Just wanted to let the internet know that I feel much better after eating and receiving two packages and a card from my mom! She’s the best ever!!! One of the parcels contained silk samples for the 1784 suit I’m making. I’m so relieved they made it here quickly, now I just have to place an order quickly and hope they can ship it to me quickly. Phew. The other package was a box of birthday presents, can’t believe I have a birthday coming up. So much going on, no time to dwell on problems.

Good night internet.

I Need to Vent

Wednesday, January 26th, 2005

It was just one of those days when every step forward I made I was forced backwards two by something/someone I had no control over. I got so frustrated I left school and came home and basted a different project. I work so hard to stay on top of things that I get unreasonably angry when someone else’s stupidity puts me behind. And in this case, I’ll be the one in trouble if the project doesn’t get done in time.

I don’t want this to be a completely angry entry so I’ll end it with praise for one of my favrorite objects…the tailor’s thimble! How wonderfully useful and comfortable it is. One of the joys of handsewing is wearing a tailor’s thimble. I think everyone needs one, just like everyone needs a Red Rider BB Gun.

I’ve been informed that I have mispelled JIF sorry about that. Guess it just goes to show how long it has been since I’ve seen it…

Peanut Butter on a Knife

Tuesday, January 25th, 2005

Ah peanut butter, the most perfect food. Part of a balanced diet it is. I’m sure there will be many entries about the wonders of peanut butter, and my disastifaction with Canadian pb. My favorite peanut butter is JIFF. Family and friends - to insure a nice posting about you send JIFF.
I had a kind of fun evening. My classmate and I went to a fabric store today and for the last block there wasn’t any sidewalk, just snow. What did I do? I did a nice high-step run that’s what! The snow was up to my knees, quite a challenge. A guy actually rolled his window down and asked how I liked the snow. Of course I said “I loved it!”
After dinner of pb on a knife I basted the princess seams of my mock-up of a tail coat. If you understood that sentence you’re probably my mother:)
And for the grand finale….a picture of my puppy Josephine (Josie, Jo) who I miss soo much because unlike my family, she can’t talk to me on the phone or write emails. Or maybe she can but she just doesn’t like me enough…
Anyway, here she is in all her cuteness.

Morning

Tuesday, January 25th, 2005

Acadmey Award nominations are being announced this morning at 8:30 EST which means at 9:30 Atlantic time which means I’ll be in class. Who knows how long I’ll have to wait before I can get online and find out who’s nominated for what. Man my life is rough.

Snow Day!

Monday, January 24th, 2005

I’ve finished my “happy there is no school and I don’t have to go out in this weather” dance and so I thought I would write a little.
Today is the second Monday in a row that has been cancelled due to a blizzard. That’s right, we had one last Sunday too. Excellent place, Halifax. Unfortunately, this also means that my Monday classes are way behind their syllabus. Le sigh.
This entry is going to be a little bit of show and tell. I would like to share with the internet (because I know it cares) some pictures I took yesterday when I was stupid enough to go out in the blizzard. This first one is of Bishop’s Landing which is right across the street from my apartment. I was actually trying to get a picture of the harbor (which is behind me in the photo) but I found that I couldn’t turn around and lift my head up, or open my eyes. So instead you get a picture of this upscale shopping and living area.
This second picture is of one of the busiest corners in Halifax and is part of my daily walk to school. It’s a very nasty, windy corner and I hate it. I took a picture hoping it’s evilness would appear in the photo like ghosts sometimes do when you develop film. I don’t actually see anything but I haven’t studied the pic all that long.

I took other pictures and if you are part of my family or a close friend then you got to see that hysterical pic I took of myself battling the elements. If not, too bad for you.

It is necessary to mention that this years blizzards are nothing compared to what we had last year. Near the end of February we received a meter of snow in one night. The city of Halifax shut down for a looooong time and we even had curfews! The upside to the blizzard is that I got to see a white baby seal that was abandoned/lost/sunning itself on a snow bank near the harbor. It was amazing, I will cherish that memory forever.

What to do during a blizzard…start a blog!

Sunday, January 23rd, 2005

I’ve finally taken my brother’s offer and started a blog of my own. Cut me some slack for a while, I’m new to this world of inflated self-worth, I mean online diaries.
I have something along the lines of a plan for this thing. I shall use it as a vehicle for my plans to take over the world. Hmm, let that slip a little too early. Actually, I want to post pictures of the costumes I’ve brought to life and my own designs.
After that little introduction it is now time for BACKGROUND INFO! Waaahooo!
My name is Julianne and I am getting my diploma in Costume Studies from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. That’s in Canada people, what happened to those geography classes? What does this program teach me you ask? Well, I am learning to take a costume designer’s sketch and make it come to life. That means I’ve been learning how to draft patterns, tailor, sew, dye, and lots of other things. On the side, I like to make clothing for myself and after graduation I want to have a part time business making couture clothing. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle. (Thank you G.I. Joe for that phrase, I will forever be in debt to you.)
Over time I will be adding photos of Halifax, my lovely life and of my even lovilier creations of the fabric kind. Dalhousie University
