Fashion Models and BMI

As I was browsing the BBC news website (Chris, you need to tell me how to make a word a link) I found an article about the Spanish Association of Fashion Designer’s voluntary ban of models with a BMI of less then 18. The article went on to say that that would be about 30% of the models. I was so happy to read this article, it seems that someone is finally taking a positive step forward towards promoting health, not skinniness. It’s all fine and good to say things need to change but this is the first time, in my memory, that a large organization is doing something tangible. Go Spain!

Funny that you posted this just now.

Over the weekend I took time to watch a couple of really good old B&W movies from 1939, including “Only Angels Have Wings” with Jean Arthur and Rita Hayworth, and they looked great. They also looked like real people. I wondered at the time why Hollywood had gotten so extreme in women’s appearance. Twiggy redux?

Then I saw a news artical on some flap in the fashion biz in L.A. this morning, and the photos of the women working in the shops looked like holocaust survivors with better make-up. I consciously thought “Who would do that to themselves willingly?” It was positively annorexia on review.

Good catch Kiddo, and you’re right - “Go Spain”

I saw the BBC article as well and thought it was a great thing. I was going to link to the article here for you, but I couldn’t find it again.

To create a link, btw, you just type the following <a href=”http://your.url.com/”>Link Text<a> and that’s it. Substituting the url and link text that you want, of course.

the link is wrong. you have to close the “a” tag so it should say…..

*make sure to have that slash before the last a!

and by the way i am appalled that spain is doing this. models are not the only thing to blame for eating disorders. they are not examples. they are simply hangers for the designers clothing.

From experience of working in the fashion industry, I have not yet met any female model who had an eating disorder. These women are naturally thin and honestly can eat whatever they wish to stuff in their delicate faces with out any regurgitation. There is slight offense from such folks who wish to blame eating disorders on the fashion industry and its hired workers. Coming from a nation that is generally overweight (United States), it’s no surprise.
